Introduction

‘ “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” — Colossians 3:16

Recorded in 128x96p for your podcasting pleasure.

Summary

Following on the heels of my toast to the father of modern English hymnaty, Benjamin Keach, comes a collection of songs I have had the time and privilege to record, and participate in the singing of, at various churches and events.

The first two songs sung in this video here are from the 1650 Scottish Psalter that goes by the name of “The Psalms of David in Meter” sung by a certain Reformed Baptist congregation. If you’re unfamiliar of what a Psalter is, it is a translation of the Psalms contained in the Holy bible set to the rhyming and syllable patterns of the English language. This particular Psalter happened to be translated within a generation of the venerable King James, or Authorized, Bible.

The third song here was recorded at a Beer & Hymns event sung from the Cantus Christi 2020, a modern hymnal published by Cannon Press, which also contains all the Psalms of the Holy Bible pulling from the text of the New King James Bible. A wide representation of Christian denominations participated in it’s singing including Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterians, and other participants that joined in.

The remaining songs were recorded at a Gospel music event pulling from the Sacred Harp 2025, a hymnal notated in 4 part shape notes pulling from very broad and deep hymnal traditions. Also, sung by a broad collection of Christians from various backgrounds, Free Will & Primitive Baptist, various Reformed traditions, and other participants who seemed to have an appreciation of the music style.

Enjoy.
